12 arrested for running tax evasion racket
SURAT: A team of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) from Ahmedabad trapped 12 persons at Songadh check-post on Gujarat-Maharashtra border for allowing trucks to enter the state without paying commercial tax at the sales tax check-post.
A team of ACB led by police inspector K T Kamaria carried out checking at Songadh check-post on Wednesday from 10am to 6pm. During checking, ACB sleuths identified five trucks which were allowed to enter Gujarat without paying tax on the goods they were transporting. It was also found that the truck drivers managed to evade the tax by contacting some individuals who work as agent for sales tax officials posted at the check-post.
Police booked 12 persons, including commercial tax officer M M Patel, who is posted at Songadh. Of the booked persons, two agents who were running the entire nexus on behalf of this officer managed to escape, while 10 others were arrested. Apart from Patel, five truck drivers and other security staff were arrested for their involvement in the evasion racket.
