Paul Christopher explores BVI-HK connection at Business BVI’s Annual Asia conference
On 11 September 2014, Business BVI held its Annual Asia conference in Hong Kong — ‘Pivoting to Asia: the pathway to new opportunities’. Paul Christopher, managing partner of Mourant Ozannes’ Hong Kong office, appeared as a panellist in a key panel discussion on the event’s programme, entitled ‘The BVI-HK connection: the next level — continued constructive engagement and areas of mutual opportunity’, providing valuable insight into British Virgin Islands/Hong Kong relations.
The discussion covered a range of topics, including an overview on the opportunities within Hong Kong and Asia; why the British Virgin Islands remains popular versus its competition from other jurisdictions; what can be done to increase the market in China; how to enhance Hong Kong’s role; and what steps ought to be taken in the People’s Republic of China.
Further, conversation turned to a collaborative British Virgin Islands approach, the topic of moving up the value chain, a review of regulation and the prevalent tax issues around DTAs and TIEAs.
