East Staffordshire councillors back fraud crackdown
COMMUNITY leaders in East Staffordshire have pledged to make a stand against tax dodgers, by backing a new campaign called Towns Against Tax Dodging.
East Staffordshire Borough Council has signed up to the ActionAid movement, which aims to urge the Government to do more to tackle multi-national tax dodging in the UK and developing countries.
It has been estimated the UK Treasury loses as much as £12 billion a year to tax dodgers, with recent high-profile offenders including the company which owns Primark, Kingsmill and Silverspoon Sugar.
Councillor Julian Mott, leader of East Staffordshire Borough Council, said: “Everyone who benefits from public spending should contribute their fair share, including large UK multinational corporations.
“The UK government must listen to the strength of public feeling and act to end the injustice of tax dodging by large multi-national companies, in developing countries and the UK.”
