On 16 October, the Saeima (Parliament), in its final reading, passed the “Public Persons Enterprises and Capital Shares Governance Law” in order to promote more effective governance of companies owned by the state and local governments. The Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Angel Gurría, has welcomed the passage of this law and expressed appreciation of its provisions that are consistent with the OECD recommendations on ensuring the efficiency and transparency of state-owned companies. The OECD will be closely monitoring the implementation of the new law.
On 23 October, the OECD Working Party on State Ownership and Privatisation Practices will review the final report on Latvia’s compliance with the OECD Guidelines on Corporate Governance of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).
