Lagos charges 50 firms to court over tax evasion
THE Lagos State government has begun the prosecution of no fewer than 50 companies over alleged tax evasion charges. The number adds up to 200 that have so far been charged to court in the last one year.
Chairman of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Services (LIRS), Tunde Fowler, disclosed this yesterday, as he promised that the government would double effort at prosecuting corporate organisations and individuals that default in the payment of their taxes in accordance with the state’s taxation laws.
Most of the culprits, according to Fowler, are unregistered members of the organised private sector in the folds of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA), who already have over 95 per cent tax compliant rate.
Fowler said the LIRS is currently conducting a tax audit on many multinational and local companies to establish their tax liability and take appropriate action against them.
