Lottery credit audit may affect property tax bill
Fond du Lac County Treasurer’s Office is notifying the public that the Wisconsin Department of Revenue is auditing the 2014 Lottery and Gaming Credits claimed within Fond du Lac County.
The Treasurer’s Office has mailed information to those individuals who may be affected by this audit. Those individuals are asked to respond to the mailing on or before Friday, May 8.
The current Lottery and Gaming law provides authorization to grant the credit to Wisconsin residents who own and use a dwelling as their primary residence as of the certification date (Jan. 1) of the year in which property taxes are levied.
Primary residence is defined as the home where an individual lives. If temporarily absent, typically for a period no longer than six months (hospital, vacation, incarcerated, etc), it is the home to which the owner returns. Only one primary residence may be claimed. Persons can not claim this credit on business property, rental units, land, garages or other properties, Julie Hundertmark, Fond du Lac County Treasurer, said in a press release.
Last year the average lottery credit in Fond du Lac County was approximately $113. The exact amount is based upon the school district in which the home is located.
Property owners can verify they received the Lottery and Gaming Credit credit by visiting the Fond du Lac County website www.fdlco.wi.gov. Click on “Property & Tax Data” followed by “Lottery & Gaming Credit Info.”
Persons who did not receive the 2014 credit and qualify to receive it can refer to the instructions on how to file a Late Lottery and Gaming Credit Application. The application along with instructions can be obtained on the county’s website.
Deadline to submit the 2014 late claim application, along with a copy of the 2014 tax bill to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue is Thursday, Oct. 1. The Treasurer’s office can assist property owners in completing the necessary paperwork to receive the late credit.
If a property qualified as a primary residence on Jan. 1, residents can refer to the instructions to obtain a Lottery and Gaming Credit on the 2015 tax bill, and submit the 2015 application to the Fond du Lac County Treasurer’s office by Sunday, Nov. 1. The Treasurer’s office will assist in completing the necessary paperwork.
A signed application must be on file before the Lottery and Gaming Credit will appear on the property tax bill.
