Moon Orders Joint Probe Team on Offshore Tax Evasion
President Moon Jae-in has criticized tax evasion as an antisocial act that undermines social fairness and justice.
He called on related agencies to form a joint investigation team and draft cooperative measures against attempts to evade tax through illegal concealment of assets overseas.
Chairing a meeting with his top aides on Monday, the president said that cases of offshore tax evasion involving the social elite who are illegally hiding assets and income in other countries have enraged the public.
He stressed that the ongoing anticorruption investigation by the prosecution aimed at eradicating irregularities of the past era must uncover criminal proceeds hidden abroad and retrieve them.
For this aim, President Moon ordered the National Tax Service, the Korea Customs Service and the prosecution to set up a joint probe team and coordinate measures to track down and punish tax dodgers and confiscate their criminal proceeds.
