Kenya: Media, Civil Society Urged to Fight Unfair Tax
THE media and civil society organisations should join hands and work together to ensure a fair taxation system in Africa, an advocacy group has said.
Tax evasion, illicit financial flows and harmful tax incentives are rampant among governments, investors and multinational companies in Africa, Tax Justice Network’s Africa executive director Alvin Musomia said.
He was speaking on Friday during a training workshop at Maanzoni in Machakos.
Musomia said a survey in six countries in the Sub Saharan showed tax evasion was a high with European nations being the tax havens.
“There is no doubt that the taxation is critical for development in our countries,” he said.
“Poor tax systems and low tax collection levels are linked to high poverty levels.”
Musomia said that with foreign companies being awarded tenders to undertake mining projects, there was need for a close monitoring to ensure they do not evade taxes.
