Greens leader Christine Milne calls for Australia’s tax laws to be tightened
The Greens have called for Australia’s tax laws to be tightened as they push to have multinational companies “named and shamed” for avoiding tax.
Federal Greens leader Senator Christine Milne told Tom Elliott not enough was being done to keep big businesses accountable which legally sent money earned in Australia offshore for tax purposes.
“It’s not illegal to avoid tax, it’s illegal to evade tax,” she explained on 3AW Drive.
“They avoid it.
“The Tax Office says the problem with the law at the moment is that it has several grey areas.
“As a result, these companies take the tax office to court, they challenge everything and it goes on for months.
“It costs a fortune and inevitably the Tax Office loses.”
