Latvia removes Gibraltar from tax haven blacklist
The Republic of Latvia has removed Gibraltar from its blacklist of tax havens, the latest EU country to recognise that the Rock complies with international rules on exchange of financial information, reports the Gibraltar Chronicle.
The decision by Latvia comes after the EU last month published a list of the 30 countries most often cited as harmful tax havens by European countries.
Gibraltar did not figure on that list, prompting the Spanish government to state that it would complain to the European Commission.
But Spain is among just a handful of EU countries who view the Rock’s financial services sector in a negative light.
The decision by Latvia follows similar moves recently by Poland and Italy and means that only six out of 28 EU countries consider that Gibraltar is a harmful jurisdiction.
