Isle of Man: Global Tax Investigations Conference – Isle of Man, September 2015
Following successful conferences in the Isle of Man in 2014 and in Gibraltar in March 2015, leading offshore law firm DQ Advocates and global law firm Latham & Watkins will be hosting their latest Global Tax Investigations Conference in the Isle of Man on 11 September 2015.
The conference is aimed at offshore service providers and regulated businesses who either find themselves involved in a global tax or criminal investigation or wish to take proactive steps to minimise the likelihood of a costly and time consuming investigation. It is a ‘must attend’ event for senior management and directors of financial services businesses who will have the opportunity to hear from UK and US tax investigation specialists as well as a leading fraud expert.
HMRC Investigations
In addition to welcoming back leading US lawyers from Latham & Watkins, this year’s conference will feature more content on HMRC investigations. Fiona Fernie, a partner leading Pinsent Mason’s Tax Investigations team, will address delegates on the current position of HMRC’s enforcement regime as well as on anticipated future developments. Fiona has over 25 years’ experience advising clients on complex HMRC investigations and was well received at the Gibraltar conference for her knowledge and her sensible approach.
Following the Money & Fraud
Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from Neal Levin, partner of Chicago based law firm Freeborn & Peters LLP on his first visit to the Isle of Man. Neal heads up Freeborn’s Fraud and Internal Investigations Practice Group. Neal’s expertise includes all aspects of fraud with a particular focus on understanding the psychology of the fraudster. Neal will present his interesting and very entertaining talk on “The Psychology of Fraud, from Neanderthal to Madoff” and join panel discussions to advise delegates on how to recognise when your client may be engaged in criminal or fraudulent activity.
FATCA and AML
With US FATCA reporting having been completed for the first time this year, followed by UK FATCA next year and an unstoppable global momentum towards a Common Reporting Standard, the number of global tax and criminal cross border investigations is going to rise significantly. The conference will open with a useful session on US/UK FATCA in practice and how this regime (along with the Common Reporting Standard and the AML regime) will impact tax investigations and your business generally.
