Assam: CBI arrests IT Commissioner in connection to tax evasion case

The CBI has arrested Swetabh Suman, Commissioner of Income Tax (Audit), Guwahati, Assam from Delhi in connection with a case of tax evasion and criminal conspiracy.
The central agency has registered a case against the arrested Commissioner of Income Tax. Similar procedures have been initiated against Income Tax Officer (Audit) Pratap Das along with Advocate and Chartered Accountants Ramesh Goenka, Amit Goenka and Jorhat- based businessman Suresh Agarwala.
Based on an FIR, sleuths of the CBI conducted searches in Guwahati, Jorhat, Nagaon, Shillong, Noida, Delhi and some other places linked to the private firm under the scanner and seized Rs 40 lakh and some other incriminating documents.
According to CBI officials, in 2017-18, the Commissioner of IT agreed to show undue favours to the Jorhat based businessman by passing a favourable order in an appeal arising out of assessment done in respect of M/S Win Power Infra Pvt Ltd.
Swetabh Suman allegedly abused his official position and made attempts to obtain illegal gratification of Rs. 50 lakh from Suresh Agarwala, Director of one shell company for himself and Pratap Das through the Chartered Accountants.
Dr Swetabh Suman was earlier booked by the CBI in a disproportionate assets case in 2005.
